So Saturday night the wife and I went out on a date. Dinner and a movie is always a fun evening out. So we hit the Richmond district and dropped into Kim Son Vietnamese Restaurant. Dinner was awesome! Afterwards we walked halfway down the block to the Balboa Theatre to see the film Pan’s Labyrinth.
Director Guillermo Del Toro has created a lush fantasy-fairy tale world to offset the real life drama of a little girl meeting her new step father who is a captain in Franco’s regime during the Spanish Civil War. He is one of the best movie villains I’ve seen this year. And when I mention a fairy tale world I’m not talking about some cute and pretty Disney-esque setting. I’m talking about going back to the roots of European fairy tales – you know, dark and scary.
Go see it!
